ਚੂੜੇ ਦੀ ਰਸਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮਾਮਾ-ਮਾਮੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਲੱਡੂ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਸਨ, ਝੋਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਰੁਪਈਏ ਤੇ ਠੂਠੀਆਂ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਠਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਹ ਕਮਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਠੂਠੀਆਂ ਭੰਨ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕੁਆਰੀਆਂ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਧਾਰਨਾ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਕੁੜੀ/ਮੁੰਡੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਠੂਠੀਆਂ ਖਿਲਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਜਲਦੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਪਰਦੇਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਨ ਨਾਲ ਬਾਹੀਂ ਚੂੜਾ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਜ-ਵਿਆਹੀਆਂ ਵੱਲ ਤੱਕਦੇ ਮਨ ਅੱਖੜਦਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ
